Plans and the Purpose of God (T)

Oftentimes when I read biblical wisdom literature (think Proverbs) I find myself wrestling with verses/statements that seem to contradict themselves.

For instance, yesterday I read: “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand” (**Proverbs 19:21).

Man makes a plan. The LORD’s purpose will stand. Really? Apparently.

And then today: “Plans are established by counsel; by wise guidance wage war” (**Proverbs 20:18).

So I guess it is good to make plans and to do so by seeking counsel and wise guidance.

Why make plans anyway, though, if God’s purpose will stand regardless? Thus the wisdom literature. Might it be that God has ordained to unveil His purposes when planning with counsel and wisdom from others who know and love the Lord? I think so. And might it be God’s way of helping us not worry when, as we plan and work and strive to do the right thing, we can trust His purposes will stand firm? I think so.

Plan. Plan hard. Plan wisely. Plan with counsel and guidance. While you plan, trust that the purpose of God will rise to the top.
