SBC to Change Its Name???? (A)

There are ALOT of reasons I am interested in the ‘why and what’ regarding the recent task force appointed by SBC President Bryant Wright to consider changing the name of SBC.

Apparently, Wright has asked the task force to consider four questions regarding a change: “1) Is it a good idea, that is, is there value in considering a name change? 2) If so, what would be a good name to suggest? 3) What would be the potential legal ramifications of a name change? 4) What would be the potential financial implications?”

The Baptist Press story is here.

Denny Burk has compiled a list of articles that have already been written about it out in the ‘evangelical cyberspace.’ I would commend his brief word on it and the articles he links to by going here.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

  1. That is quite an impressive list of names on the Task Force to consider renaming the convention. Having been a card-carrying Southern Baptist for 61 years, I feel a strong loyalty to the SBC and all it represents. But, having lived in South America and working with fellow missionaries from all over the US, I was certainly made aware of the confining/regional-ness/narrow-focus-ness of a name beginning with SOUTHERN. I find myself being drawn to support a name change in light of all the positive aspects of doing so.
