Why Do You Seek the Living Among the Dead?

“Why do you seek the living among the dead?” (Luke 24:5)

What a great question posed by the angels to these women. Jesus had told them on the third day He would rise from the dead. The angels simply confronted them with that reality. Why in the world would you look for someone who is alive at a place where dead people are? Why would you go to a tomb or a graveyard to hunt down someone you knew to be alive? You go anywhere but a graveyard to search for someone who is living! Searching for a living person in a grave plot is like searching for a cat swimming in a swimming pool. You aren’t going to find it. It’s like trying to find Gene Chizik hold up the BCS National Championship trophy this year. Not going to happen. Dead people are in graveyards. Living people are anywhere else. Cats are out chasing mice. Not in swimming pools. Auburn is trying to score a touchdown. Not play for the BCS.

These women were searching for Jesus in a graveyard because they thought He was still dead. What about you?

Because Jesus rose from the dead, we can ask this question: “Why are you living as if Jesus is dead?”

The consequence of sin – death – has been defeated. The punishment deserved for us has been endured. All of it for all who believe. So, if you believe, then why do you live as if there is something else to be done? There’s not. The penalty has been paid in full and death could not keep Him down. The curse of sin was reversed when the perfect Man, Jesus, took on the sins of the world.

Be free Christian! Your sins are atoned for! Quit living as if there is something else to be done. If you believe – you are right with God RIGHT NOW. Rest in that! It’s not based on what you do or have done. It’s based on the fact that Jesus isn’t among the dead – but among the living! So don’t walk around today as if He’s dead. He’s alive.

And He did it so you could be alive too.

  1. PRAISE GOD and thank you for the reminder!

  2. I’m still in shock over the Rick Saban blog, but I found a good reminder in this one. I especially liked your encouragement — “Don’t walk around today as if He’s dead. He’s alive!” “Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.” Amen. Amen.
